Watchdog called in after man injured by police dog in Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C. - British Columbia's police watchdog is investigating after a man was injured during a confrontation with a police dog on Saturday night.

Kelowna RCMP say an officer was flagged down by a man who reported that his bicycle had been stolen at about 10 p.m.

Mounties say the suspect tried to escape down a popular walking and cycling trail before a police dog and its handler were deployed.

The man was arrested after a struggle between him and the dog as well as the handler.

The Independent Investigations Office is investigating after the man suffered serious injuries when the dog bit him.

The watchdog will investigate to determine whether police actions, or inactions, led to the man's injury.
