KELOWNA - Kelowna’s skyline may seem a little dimmer this weekend. The World Wildlife Fund’s eighth annual Earth Hour will take place Saturday, March 29. Mayor Walter Gray is encouraging all Kelowna residents and businesses to participate in Earth Hour to help raise awareness for global sustainability.
“Earth Hour is an opportunity to show our support for a greener future,” said Mayor Gray. “The City of Kelowna will be turning off its lights at City Hall and Stuart Park with the exception of safety lights and those that are hard-wired.”
Interested participants are asked to turn off unnecessary lights and appliances for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The City reminds citizens to keep safety in mind before turning off all the lights in their homes or businesses.
Earth Hour is a global event highlighting the importance of conserving energy and working together to tackle climate change. It started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. It has grown into a global symbolic climate change initiative with more than 7,000 cities and towns in 154 countries and territories switching off last year.
