Rain expected, just in time for the weekend, in Okanagan, Kamloops

Much needed rain is expected to fall in Kamloops and the Okanagan this weekend.

The sun and warmth of the last several days is forecast to disappear over the weekend with wetter, cooler conditions in store for Kamloops and the Okanagan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says a weekend weather system is expected to bring some much needed moisture to the Thompson-Okanagan.

“We have the first rain expected this weekend on Friday night through Saturday, then some showers on Sunday for the Thompson and Okanagan areas,” Lundquist says.

The meteorologist says between five and 15 millimetres of rain is expected in the valley bottoms, with 15 to 25 mm expected over higher elevations.

“Everybody should get a bit,” he says.

Things should dry out somewhat to start next week, with a mix of sun and cloud, and temperatures in the mid-to-high teens.

Lundquist says it’s hard to say whether this is the start of this year’s “upper low season,” the southern Interior’s normal late spring pattern of unsettled weather conditions that usually starts in May.

“It might just be an early, lucky piece, with a more progressive flow in the week beyond, meaning less precipitation than we’re going to see on the weekend. We might have to wait until the middle of May yet to get more significant moisture,” he says.

Kamloops’s normal daily high and low for late April is 18 Celsius and 4 C. It’s normally 17 C and 3 C in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton.
