KAMLOOPS - The City of Kamloops is getting closer to finalizing the framework for cannabis retail regulations.

The federal government has set the legalization date for Oct. 17, and Kamloops city councillors will be holding a public hearing tonight, Aug. 28, at the Sandman Centre.

Tonight's meeting will include discussions on retail cannabis sales license permit application fees, the annual business license fee for cannabis retail stores as well as updating zoning bylaw definitions.

At Kamloops council's last regular meeting some councillors voiced their concerns about how much a business license fee will cost a cannabis store. Currently, the annual fee sits at $5,000 but Mayor Ken Christian says that could change and it's not set in stone.

The public hearing today, Aug. 28, starts at 7 p.m. at the Sandman Centre.
