Railside Brewing is hoping to open a taproom and patio less than a kilometre from the growing Brewery District in Kelowna’s North End.

The plan is to renovate a building at 1184 and 1186 High Rd. It’s near Gordon Drive and where a crosswalk crosses High Road from the Okanagan Rail Trail to the cycle lane running into downtown Kelowna along Cawston Avenue.

“Railside Brewing is a family and pet friendly brewery with a multitude of bike racks to encourage users of the Rail Trail to stop in without a vehicle,” states a letter accompanying the liquor permit application to the city.

“Our brewery will be a positive addition to the neighbourhood by providing a warm and inviting atmosphere where customers can enjoy local craft beer, wine and ciders.”

The plan is to use wort from nearby Vice and Virtue craft brewers, putting it in fermenters to complete the brewing process. It also plans to offer small batch brews and will include a small kitchen.

Drawings indicate seating for 96, which includes an outdoor patio.

Since 2016, at least eight craft breweries have opened in the area around Richter Street and Clement Avenue. The closest are less than a 10-minute walk from the proposed Railside Brewing site.
