Possible showers, thunderstorms to start the week in the Okanagan

Floaters enjoyed a hot day on Penticton's river channel Sunday, July 21, 2019.

KELOWNA - Inconsistent might be a word to describe the Okanagan's July weather so far, as this week begins with an unstable air mass.

Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says instability in the air today, July 22, could result in a thunderstorm late this afternoon in the Okanagan, and a trough expected to pass over the valley tomorrow will bring a chance of scattered showers.

The rest of the week looks to be sunny and dry, with temperatures expected to drop into the mid to upper 20s for highs.

Sekhon says there is a possibility of another trough approaching the valley by the weekend, unfortunately.

Today in the Okanagan, expect the sunshine this morning to give way to a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of showers this afternoon.

There is the risk of a thunderstorm in Penticton.

Winds should become north at 20 km/h later today with a high of 30 Celsius and a low tonight of 15 C.

It should reach a high of 31 C in Penticton.

There is a 30 per cent chance of showers early this evening.

Tuesday should be sunny in the morning before clouds roll in around noon, creating a 60 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon. There is also the risk of a thunderstorm, with Tuesday’s high at 30 C in Vernon and Kelowna, and a high of 28 C in Penticton.

It should be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight and a low of 14 C.

Sunny skies and seasonal temperatures are forecast for the remainder of the week, with Wednesday’s a high at 25 C.

More sun is forecast for Thursday, with a high of 27 C and a low of 14 C.

Friday should see more sun and a high of 29 C, with an overnight low of 15 C.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 27 C and lows of 12 C.
