It would be next to impossible to find anything to buy with just five cents, which is probably why nearly half of all Canadians are happy to scrap the nickel.

According to a recent Research.co poll 40 per cent of the population support taking the nickel out of circulation.

For unexplained reasons, more men are in favour of getting rid of the nickel than women, with 47 per cent of men wanting to ditch the coin compared to 33 per cent of women.

Younger people are more likely to find the nickel useless with 43 per cent happy to see it go. That number drops to 37 per cent for those 55 and older.

Attitudes towards the nickel also change from province to province.

"More than half of residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, 58 per cent, British Columbia 52 per cent and Atlantic Canada, 52 per cent, support keeping the nickel," Research Co. president Mario Canseco said in the release. "The proportion of five-cent coin fans is lower in Quebec, 49 per cent, Ontario 47 per cent and Alberta, 46 per cent."

While 40 per cent of the population is happy to see it go, 49 per cent still want to hang on to the nickel, and 11 per cent are undecided.

Surprisingly, almost one-third of Canadians are sentimental about the penny, with 29 per cent saying it shouldn't have been taken out of circulation. The penny was scrapped in February 2013.

Again more men were happy with the decision, with 77 per cent supporting the abolishment of the penny, while only 66 per cent of women were.

Younger people were more likely to be happy to see the penny go, with 74 per cent of 18- to 34-year-olds supporting the move, compared to 65 per cent of those between 35 and 54 years old.

Again, attitudes differ from province to province.

"More than seven-in-ten residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, 75 per cent, Ontario 71 per cent, and Quebec  71 per cent, agree with taking Canada’s one-cent coin out of circulation. The numbers are lower in Alberta 69 per cent and British Columbia 65 per cent.

So what do you think? Should the nickel be scrapped? Take our poll and let us know in the comment below.
