British Columbia's police watchdog has launched an investigation after a Kelowna police dog injured a suspect during an arrest early this morning.

At about 4 a.m. today, May 16, officers were following a stolen vehicle with four people in it, according to an RCMP media release.

“When the vehicle stopped officers activated their lights and sirens and informed them they were under arrest, but the individuals, including one man who was holding what was believed to be a weapon, fled on foot,” the release says.

“The police dog was deployed and made contact with the man resulting in injuries.”

The suspect was take to hospital for treatment, RCMP said.

The other three suspects were reportedly arrested without issue, according to the Independent Investigations Office, which has been called in to investigate.

Police are conducting a parallel investigation into the theft of the vehicle but since the incident is under investigation by the IIO, they are not releasing any further information.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information or video footage of the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
