KELOWNA - Kelowna Mounties pulled out all the stops in an effort to catch a suspected car thief in Kelowna on the long weekend.

A Kelowna RCMP officer came across a stolen white Toyota Corolla parked along Petch Road in Rutland on Saturday, Aug. 3 at around 4:30 p.m., according to an RCMP media release. The sedan was reported stolen from a Kelowna address on July 31.

The man in the car ran away and the officer pursued him on foot.

“The foot chase crossed through multiple residential back yards before the officer lost a visual on the suspect,” Kelowna RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in the release. “With the support of additional units to set-up an area of containment, along with the Kelowna RCMP air services helicopter circling the skies above, a police canine and his handler located and arrested the suspect.”

RCMP say the 26-year-old Kelowna man was remanded in custody over the weekend and is facing potential criminal charges.

He was set to appear in court today, Aug. 6.
