A Penticton landscaper has found a way to add a new dimension to landscape aesthetics.

Brandon Messier of Messier’s Concrete and Landscaping describes himself as "a landscaper who saw a lot of high-end builds with low-end landscapes."

“I was seeing the same kind of materials used over and over, and wanted to bring in something that was different and more versatile,” he says.

He began the search for a new product last year and only recently took a shipment of 60,000 pounds worth of glass landscape blocks and boulders.

The unique pieces are made in several different colours out of recycled glass and range in size from around two inches to three feet by three feet. The heaviest piece Messier has purchased weighs 1,600 lbs.

The glass boulders can be backlit, spotlit, or left with no illuminated. The clearer pieces will reflect light and glow on their own. The pieces are intended to add extra colour and interest to landscapes.

“The boulders make ideal feature rocks in a landscape and the smaller ones are versatile. They aren’t the cheapest things going, though, at around $5 a pound. The larger the quantity, the lower the price,” Messier says.

Messier Concrete and Landscaping is the largest holder of glass boulders in North America. Messier says he ships all over the U.S. and Canada, from Texas to the Lower Mainland. He purchases from an offshore source.

“I’m not aware of anyone who sells bigger pieces than the ones I have. I do a lot of business in landscapes and find clients often want something different, something that grabs peoples’ attention. This does it. There are lots of possibilities with respect to what can be done,” Messier says.

Anyone interested in taking a closer look at the glass boulders can see a large in front of Sandstone Landscaping Supplies, located at 1945 Government Street. Messier also has a display in front of his home at 28 Huth Avenue on Penticton. The product can also be seen on the company’s website at messiersconcrete.com.
