PENTICTON - A proposed new transit schedule for a twice-weekday bus to Kelowna has fared well with Penticton city council.

Councillors agreed unanimously to support the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen with the transit connection yesterday, March 20.

General Manager of Infrastructure Mitch Moriziuk said the creation of the daily regional connection to Kelowna emerged as a priority for local transit, following an extensive public engagement process.

He said the last two budgets have made provisions for Penticton’s share of funding for the route.

The regional district is partnering with B.C. Transit to operate the Monday to Friday, twice daily run to Kelowna. The route’s budget of $156,688 annually is expected to be reduced should non-RDOS communities along the route such as Peachland and West Kelowna decide to participate in the service.

Penticton’s share of cost for the service is estimated at $64,730, which works out to approximately $3 a year for the average city household.

The service is expected to begin in 2019.
