The City of Penticton will be making the Lake-to-Lake cycling route a little less intrusive than originally planned, at least for one local business.

Earlier in 2023, Dan and Tracy Fehr, owners of South Main Market, publicly expressed their frustration with the City’s plan to remove the parking across the road from their store and also enclose their busy parking lot with barriers.

This week the City announced that an agreement had been reached with the Fehrs.

“We’re pleased to have developed a solution with Tracy and Dan Fehr for the route adjacent to their business,” Kristen Dixon, general manager of infrastructure said in a media release.

“This design supports the needs of the market while providing a safer solution for everyone, particularly those who are walking or biking along South Main Street.”

The new design will change the parking lot from open access to one-way and parking will be angled. The nearby crosswalk will be shifted to connect pedestrians more directly to the market, which will also create more street parking on the west side of South Main.

The final draft of the final phase of the Lake-to-Lake project – from Galt Avenue to Skaha Lake – is expected to be released shortly. The public will be able to comment on it during a public engagement process. Residents will be asked which side of the street they would prefer parking to be on. Rain gardens and street trees will also be part of the consultation.
