ORL, PEA and CUPE ratify contracts

The Okanagan Regional Library, the Professional Employees Association (PEA) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees have completed their bargaining and reached new collective agreements that will see the continuation of excellent service to library patrons.

PEA provides bargaining services for more than 2500 professionals across BC. The Okanagan Regional Library chapter serves 30 members. The new PEA agreement is a three-year deal that extends to the end of 2016, with wage increases pegged at 2%, 2% and 1.92%, with some minor improvements to benefits and language. "This is a fair and reasonable deal for our members. We appreciate the hard work of the bargaining committee and the support of our membership" said Scott McCannell, PEA Executive Director.

CUPE Local 1123 represents 208 members who work for the Okanagan Regional Library.  “This  four-year deal includes wage increases of 2% in each of the first three years and  1.8% in the final year.  CUPE workers will also see some improvements to benefits and important changes to language, including simplification of call out provisions,” said CUPE 1123 President Rose Jurkic.

“I’m delighted with the news of ratification by all parties.  These negotiations were done in the spirit of collaboration, professionalism, and consensus; approaches which should serve the ORL well in the coming years,”  said Marilyn Harkness, Chair of the Okanagan Regional Library Personnel Committee.

The contracts are effective January 1st, 2014 and will continue until December 31st, 2016 for PEA and December 31st, 2017 for CUPE.
