KELOWNA - Showers and thunderstorms in the Okanagan are expected to give way to clearing skies and seasonal temperatures this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a weather alert this morning, May 23, warning of an extended periods of rain with the risk of localized flash floods beginning tonight.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the expected rain "isn't over the top" for this time of year, but the upper low moving into the region could bring between 10 and 20 mm of rain, and up to 30 mm locally to some areas. He says a drying and warming trend will begin late Saturday.

The forecast calls for a mainly cloudy day today, a 60 per cent chance of showers, a risk of a thunderstorm with a high of 24 Celsius and a low of 12. A 60 per cent chance of showers continues overnight under cloudy skies, with a continuing risk of a thunderstorm. Between 5 and 10 mm of rain is expected to fall in the Okanagan.

Showery weather is also forecast tomorrow with a continuing risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Another 10 mm of rain could fall, with a high of 20 C and an overnight low of 11 C forecast. Tomorrow afternoon should see winds becoming north at 20 km/h. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail overnight with a 60 per cent chance of showers.

Clouds and a 60 per cent chance of showers are expected to linger into Saturday before a clearing trend begins overnight with a high of 17 C and an overnight low of 9 C expected.

Sunday should be sunny with a high of 24 C.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 21 C and lows of 7 C.
