Okanagan Rail Trail work to begin after long weekend

VERNON - Upgrades to the Okanagan Rail Trail within the Okanagan has gotten the green light.

According to the Regional District of North Okanagan, work has already begun on paving the parking area on West Kal Road. Following the long weekend, contractors will begin preparations to complete erosion protection on trail sections that were damaged as a result of flooding in 2017.

"Unfortunately, this will mean inconveniences for our users during the next four weeks," the RDNO said in a press release.

Construction will result in one-way pedestrian and biking traffic in certain sections of the trail from Sept. 3 to Sept. 15. The District said there will also be no access through select portions of the trail from morning until 5 p.m. from Sept. 16 to Sept. 27.

"These timelines allow us to complete work without impacting Kokanee salmon runs in Kalamalka Lake, which is very important to us."

According to the RDNO, the trail will remain open by 5 p.m. and on all weekends.
