"IN THE COOKBOOK WORLD, THIS IS KIND OF LIKE THE OSCARS."

KELOWNA - A cookbook written by a Kelowna writer and featuring some of the Okanagan’s best recipes has gotten some important, international recognition recently.

The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine & Cheese Maker – An Okanagan Cookbook, was written, photographed and published by Kelowna resident and food writer Jennifer Schell. It won the International Gourmand award for Best Local Cuisine Book in Canada, which puts her in the running for Best in the World category.

“In the cookbook world, this is kind of like the Oscars,” says Schell. “It’s absolutely mind-blowing.”

Featured within the 200 page book are 55 recipes as well as stories from some of the Okanagan’s top chef’s, wine makers and farmers.

“The recipes are followed by a story about each of these three individuals and it portrays the relationship between the three,” says Schell. “My passion is within the valleys amazing food and wine community.”

Schell, who is the editor of Food and Wine Trails Magazine, found out about the award on Friday, Dec. 13. She says the award is even more meaningful because it’s not local, nor even national. The head office is located in Spain and there are 150 countries involved.

What sets her book apart, Schell says, is that her book acknowledges the importance of the role played by local farmers.

“It’s more than a cookbook, it’s sort of like a storybook,” she says. “There are chef recipes and then there are recipes from the farm. The chef recipes are paired with the farmer that he works with as well as a local wine maker. The usual food and wine pairings were missing the farm pairing, which is most important.”

Schell will be heading to Beijing to compete for the Best in World category in May, 2014.
