Donald Trump says he is thinking about buying Plum Island, site of animal-research lab

MINEOLA, N.Y. - Donald Trump says he may be interested in buying New York's Plum Island.

The real estate mogul and television reality star tells The Associated Press that he'd consider purchasing the island off the east coast of Long Island.

The federal government has announced plans to sell the 843-acre island. It plans to move an animal disease laboratory there to a facility being built in Kansas.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Trump says he has yet to study what he might do with the island if he were to purchase it.

Several elected officials have announced legislation to block the island's sale. Also, the town of Southold recently enacted zoning laws that would severely restrict development there.

There has been no estimate on what the island could fetch at auction.
