John Gotti's grandson gets 5 years in prison for car arson

NEW YORK - The namesake grandson of notorious mob boss John "Dapper Don" Gotti was sentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison in connection with the mob-linked revenge burning of another man's car.

John J. Gotti pleaded guilty last year to setting the fire in 2012 at the order of Bonanno family mobster Victor Asaro after Asaro was cut off by the other motorist. Gotti was sentenced in federal court in Brooklyn.

Gotti, 24, is the son of Peter Gotti, one of five children of the famous mafia don, who died as a federal prisoner in 2002.

Prosecutors had said Asaro ordered the arson after a traffic dust-up in the Howard Beach section of Queens. According to court papers at the time of his arrest last year, he gave the other driver's address to a Bonanno associate, who recruited Gotti and another man to douse the driver's car with gasoline and torch it.

Authorities said the arsonists then fled the scene in a car driven by Gotti that briefly led a police car on a high-speed chase before officers stopped out of safety concerns.

Asaro, who was acquitted in 2015 in connection with the infamous 1978 heist at the Lufthansa cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport that was retold in the 1990 hit film "Goodfellas," was sentenced in December to eight years in prison in the car arson case.

Gotti already is serving an eight-year state sentence on drug charges. U.S. District Judge Allyne Ross agreed that half of his federal sentence would run concurrently with that sentence.

Gotti told the judge he's "in a good place today."

"I look forward to the years to come," he said. "I know when I leave here I can give back to the world."

Asaro, who was 82 when he was sentenced in the car arson case, reacted to his sentence with disgust, telling the judge he didn't care what happened to him anymore because the prison term he received "is a death sentence anyway."
