Saratoga Battlefield hosts event to mark 240th anniversary

STILLWATER, N.Y. - The national park on the site of the Battles of Saratoga is hosting a weekend living history encampment to mark the second battle's 240th anniversary.

The second of the two Saratoga battles occurred on Oct. 7, 1777, nearly three weeks after the first engagement between American forces and a British army of redcoats and German mercenaries.

The Americans defeated the enemy force, leading to the British surrender 10 days later in what is now the village of Schuylerville.

The Saratoga National Historical Park event includes a historical court-martial, Revolutionary War re-enactors and a guided tour.

The American victory at Saratoga led to France entering the war on the side of the fledgling United States. French financial and military support eventually helped defeat the British at Yorktown in October 1781.
