The Latest: safety worker, trainee dead in NV mine accident

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. - The Latest on two workers killed in an accident at a northern Nevada mine (all times local PDT):

12: 10 p.m.

Federal safety regulators say the two workers who were killed in an accident at a northern Nevada gold mine were a safety co-ordinator and a mine trainee.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday eight other people were taken to a local hospital following a fatal collision Tuesday at the Marigold mine northwest of Battle Mountain.

MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere says the two victims died when the van they were riding in was run over by a haul truck.

She says the haul truck driver was hospitalized for treatment of shock. Seven trainees who were passengers in the van were taken to the hospital but subsequently released.

Louviere says the federal agency has several personnel on site and has begun a formal investigation into the cause of the accident.

Federal safety regulators are investigating an accident that claimed the life of two workers at a northern Nevada gold mine.

SSR Mining Inc. says the workers were killed Tuesday when a haul truck collided with a light vehicle at the Marigold mine northwest of Battle Mountain.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen says his office is assisting the U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration in the investigation.

Paul Benson, president and CEO of SSR Mining based in Vancouver, British Columbia, says operations at the open pit mine have been suspended indefinitely. He said in a statement company officials are deeply saddened by the loss of their colleagues and offer their heartfelt sympathy to their families.

He says they are co-operating fully with the investigators to determine the cause of the accident.
