Man hospitalized after being found unresponsive at Halifax police headquarters

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's independent police watchdog is investigating the case of a man found unresponsive in cells at Halifax police headquarters.

Halifax police say the 47-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication and taken into custody just after 9:30 p.m. Monday.

About an hour later, staff doing routine checks found the man unresponsive in his cell.

Police say they did first aid until paramedics arrived to take him to hospital, where his condition was described as being life-threatening.

Police say the case has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates all serious cases involving police.

In a separate statement, the team says the man's condition was self-inflicted but did not provide any details.
