North Okanagan Shuswap school district fined $200,000 by WorkSafeB.C.

School District 83 board office.

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District has been fined more than $200,000 for violating WorkSafeB.C. regulations.

The fine for $204,814.95 was given on March 22 as the district was conducting security upgrades at one of the school locations and failed to ensure asbestos-containing materials were contained or removed prior to drilling work being conducted.

"WorkSafeB.C inspected the site and determined that drilling work to install wiring had disturbed drywall and vermiculite, both identified as asbestos-containing materials on the building's hazardous materials survey,” according to a report by WorkSafeB.C.

“This was a repeated violation.”

The school district has requested a review of the decision, according to the report that was last updated April 30.

The report does not list which school the work was being conducted at.
