VERNON - A Vernon man has been charged after what may have been a misguided attempt to rescue a fawn.

Conservation officer Tanner Beck says the man took possession of fawn in Vernon's Bella Vista neighbourhood yesterday, June 12, and carried it around for roughly two hours before he was caught by police.

"It's not quite clear what his intentions were, he had carried (the fawn) around without making any contact to any agency," Beck says.

The man was charged with unlawful possession of live wildlife.

Beck says the RCMP were the ones to retrieve the fawn from the man and hand it over to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.

As the Southern Interior enters fawning season it is common for people to find fawns alone in the wild, but Beck says the best thing to do is to leave them alone.

"(The mothers) know exactly where they leave their fawn and when people move them they are running the risk of having that fawn orphaned," he says.

The B.C. Conservation officers have returned the fawn back to the location where it was found. Beck says the individual charged is known to RCMP in the area.
