KELOWNA – Three firefighters injured trying to save someone from a burning trailer Sunday are still recovering, but home from hospital.

“They’re doing OK. They’re all in good spirits," Kelowna fire deputy chief Scott Cronquist says. “It’s going to take some time to heal up."

Firefighters were called to a mobile home park on McCulloch Road shortly before 5 a.m. Jan. 14.

A media release sent the day after the fire says crews were met by heavy fire activity in the front of the mobile home.

Platoon Capt. Steve Wallick said the firefighters were injured trying to rescue a resident who was later found dead. While inside, the roof of the mobile home collapsed.

Kelowna Professional Firefighters Association president Mike Hill says it’s part of the job.

“As firefighters we are willing to risk a lot to save lives,” he says. “We manage the risk as best we can.”

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says investigators have been unable to determine an exact cause of the blaze "mainly due to the extent of damage caused at the scene.”

Neither the fire nor the death are considered suspicious.
