Residents of Kamloops can take used oil and antifreeze to a new facility that turns the waste materials into new products in a free and convenient way.

The new site, located at Jaxsen-Pacific Marine and Motorsport on 755 Fortune Drive, has a 20 foot modified sea container and two 1,000 litre intermediate bulk storage containers to use for the responsible collection and storage of the materials.

The facility was made possible with a grant from B.C. Used Oil Management Association, a not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of used lubricating oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers in the province, according to a media release by the association.

“The population of Kamloops is rapidly growing, and Jaxsen-Pacific Marine and Motorsport prioritized the needs of its community by opening this easy-to-use and accessible used oil recycling facility,” said CEO of B.C. Used Oil Management Association, David Lawes, in the release. “(Our association) continues to look for opportunities to open new and improve existing recycling facility locations across the province to provide British Columbians with reasonable access to convenient and free used oil recycling centres.”

Each year approximately 50 million litres of oil and 3 million litres of antifreeze are collected and responsibly managed through the association’s network of public recycling centres and generators across the province.

Used oil is a valuable resource that can be recovered and re-used. It can be re-refined into new lubricating oil, or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products. Used oil filters contain metal which is recycled products like rebar, nails and wire. Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs, while used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze, said the association.

The association’s infrastructure grant program provides businesses with the infrastructure required to responsibly handle, collect, and store used oil and antifreeze materials using economic, efficient, and environmentally acceptable options.
