Never Forget to Take Your Medications Again

Compliance packaging keeps medications, days and times easily organized and easier to dispense.

Is it the blue pill with lunch, and the orange with dinner, or are they both to be taken at bedtime?
Keeping track of medication, or more so, several medications, can be confusing and daunting. Often medications can be forgotten, mixed up or taken at the wrong time making them less effective or even harmful.
Inadequate medication adherence is a widespread problem that leads to an increase in health complications and even unnecessary expenditures due to waste, says Kristina Gifford, owner and pharmacist at Kipp-Mallery Pharmacy IDA in Kamloops. But she offers a solution.
“When the number of medications you take becomes confusing, or perhaps you are just one of those people who have a difficult time remembering to take your medication, compliance packaging can make it easy,” suggests Gifford.
Blister packaging or medication strips are a way to have peace of mind that medications are dispensed to the highest standards and accuracy. Compliance packaging is a way for patients to control self administration. It’s also an effective tool to treat those with certain diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, which can make it physically difficult for a patient to access pill bottles, explains Gifford.
For the aging population, those with vision problems, mental health patients, people with a complex medication regime or those who are easily swayed from their routine, Gifford says compliance packaging is a real advantage. This kind of medication organization can also make it much easier for caregivers as there is no question as to type of med, day, time, or occurrence.
“Compliance is patient specific and can be done in different ways. It allows for people to have more independence and for them to stay in their home longer,” says Gifford. Bubble packaging or medication strips can both be packaged in one or two week, or one month groupings. Kipp-Mallery provides this at no charge, and automated delivery can be arranged eliminating the need to phone in prescription renewals.
In addition to the bubble packaging and medication strips, Kipp-Mallery also now offers Spencer, an automated dispensing device that dispenses the appropriate medications at the appropriate time. The unit is connected with the healthcare system, or a caregiver, giving the highest likelihood for adherence for people living at home.
Spencer will send an alert to a caregiver that the patient hasn’t taken their medication. It will also verbally remind the patient to take the dispensed medication.
