The Latest: Campbell quits US House race

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Latest on Tom Campbell pulling out of the U.S. House race (all times local):

12:05

North Dakota Republican state Sen. Tom Campbell has withdrawn from the U.S. House race.

Campbell made the announcement Wednesday at a luncheon in Fargo, saying it was important for the party to unite to win the race.

The wealthy potato farmer from Grafton says he will support state Sen. Kelly Armstrong, who won party endorsement at last weekend's state convention.

Campbell had filed a petition Monday to run in the June 12 primary despite losing the endorsement, but party officials had been seeking to get him to step aside.

Campbell spent more than $750,000 of his own money on a Senate campaign starting last summer. He switched to the House after GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer announced he would challenge incumbent Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.

North Dakota GOP U.S. House hopeful Tom Campbell has called a news conference amid speculation that he will end his campaign.

Campbell was to make an announcement on the race at a luncheon in Fargo. His campaign would not say what it was.

State Republican Party Chairman Rick Berg and state Sen. Kelly Armstrong, who won party endorsement over Campbell at last weekend's state convention, were listed as speakers at the event. Berg declined to confirm that Campbell was quitting the race but said "That would be my expectation."
