TORONTO - Toronto police say pop star Justin Bieber did not film a video promoting his music while in their custody.
The 12-second clip popped up on Bieber's Instagram account shortly after the 19-year-old surrendered to Toronto police last night.
In it, the pop star urges fans to check out his new video for "Confident."
This morning, Toronto Police stated on Twitter that the video was not shot at the station.
Bieber is facing a charge of assault.
Police allege he was one of six people picked up from a nightclub in the early morning hours of Dec. 30, and that there was an altercation in the limousine on the way to a hotel.
On Wednesday night, Bieber had to navigate a crowd of journalists and screaming fans as he made his way into a downtown police station.
Shortly afterward, the video appeared online.
"Is the camera on? Oh yeah it is," says Bieber, seen in a dark baseball cap turned backwards, although it's not clear if it's the same one he wore to the police station.
"What's up guys? Justin here. 'Confident' is out right now … So go get it, go look at it, go comment."
In the terse statement issued Thursday, Toronto police said: "TPS has been asked if @justinbieber filmed a video while in our custody at 52 Division. Answer: no."
Bieber was charged with one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10.
