Multiple contaminated drug supply alerts issued for Kamloops, Vernon

January 08, 2021 - 4:45 PM

Interior Health has issued four contaminated drug alerts today, after fentanyl, benzodiazepines and other toxic substances were found in drug supplies in Vernon and Kamloops.

The health authority issued two alerts in Kamloops Jan. 8, for a brown pebble substance and grey blue pebble that are currently being sold as down.

The brown pebble contains a erizolam (type of benzodiazepine), fentanyl and amb-fubinaca while the grey was found to have fentanyl and benzodiazepines.

Both substances have a high risk of overdose and the user may not respond to naloxone.

In Vernon, the health authority is warning of toxic substances being sold as fentanyl.

A pink fentanyl, being sold as fentanyl, contains caffeine, etizolam and fentanyl. Purple down is also being sold as fentanyl and contains caffeine, mannitol, fentanyl, amb-fub (a synthetic cannabinoid), and etizolam (a benzo).

These substances have a high risk of overdose with prolonged sedation and users may not respond to naloxone. In substances with the synthetic cannabinoid, hallucinations or agitation can occur.

Interior Health says to give breaths for those who are overdosing on these substances and to seek medical attention.

The toxic drug alerts remain in effect until Jan. 15.

More information can be found on Interior Health's website.
