The Latest: Interstate 94 reopened following protest

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Latest on protests in St. Paul that shut down part of Interstate 94 (all times local):

2:15 a.m.

Police say the section of Interstate 94 in St. Paul that was closed by protesters has been reopened.

Officers used smoke bombs just after midnight as about 200 people blocked the roadway to protest recent fatal police shootings of black men, including one last week during a traffic stop in suburban St. Paul.

Police say arrests were made during the protest, which began Saturday night at the governor's mansion before protesters marched to the interstate.

Police say at least five officers suffered non-serious injuries when hit by rocks, firecrackers and bottles thrown by protesters.

The St. Louis Police Department tweeted that the interstate had reopened early Sunday morning, after officers cleared debris.

Police say at least five officers have been injured by firecrackers, bottles and rocks thrown by protesters during a demonstration that blocked part of Interstate 94.

The St. Paul Police Department tweeted that one officer was hit in the face with a bottle, while another was hit by a piece of concrete. The department says none of the officers was seriously injured.

Some protesters condemned the activity and said the protest was largely peaceful.

Mike Martin said he was trying to promote peace when he was pepper sprayed by a police officer on a pedestrian bridge. He said he was trying to move the crowd along and keep the peace.

Officers used smoke bombs to help clear protesters from the interstate. Police said early Sunday morning that they were now clearing debris from the roadway in an effort to reopen the interstate.

Police have used smoke bombs to clear demonstrators blocking Interstate 94 in St. Paul during a protest sparked by the recent police killings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana.

The smoke was used just after midnight when about 200 protesters were in the roadway as police in riot gear slowly moved in. Police said several officers have been injured by rocks, firecrackers and other debris thrown by protesters Saturday night.

A protest leader urged the group to march to the governor's mansion, where protesters have gathered since the fatal police shooting Wednesday night of Philando Castile. The 32-year-old black man was shot during a traffic stop in suburban St. Paul.

The St. Paul Police Department tweeted that arrests have been made during the protest but didn't indicate how many.
