TRAIL, B.C. - A search is underway in southeastern British Columbia for a missing skier.

RCMP in the Trail area say they received a report Monday at around 5 p.m. of a skier overdue after the man failed to return from a run on the back side of Red Mountain.

By the time the report was received, police say 34-year-old Rossland-area resident Mark Gayowski had already been missing for several hours.

An initial search was conducted Monday night but was limited by darkness, dangerous terrain and heavy snowfall.

A ground search resumed at daylight and includes snowmobiles and ski teams but police say weather conditions hamper rescue efforts.

Red Mountain has reported moderate to heavy snowfall in the area.
