Caution urged amid ice storm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Original Publication Date February 04, 2019 - 6:26 AM

MARQUETTE, Mich. - An ice storm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is closing schools and business and creating hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning Monday, saying power outages and tree damage could accompany the icy weather. Northern Michigan University in Marquette cancelled classes Monday. Untreated roadways and sidewalks at the school were slippery due to ice.

Several crashes were reported and the Marquette County sheriff's office warned people to stay off the roads unless it's essential. WLUC-TV reports Marquette City Hall also was closed and the U.S. Postal Service suspended mail delivery Monday in the Marquette area due to the weather.

The icy weather came after Michigan emerged in recent days from last week's deep freeze. Icy conditions were forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday in the Lower Peninsula, including the Detroit area.
