A wildfire burning along the highway in Merritt is suspected to be human caused.

B.C. Wildfire Service says on its website the grassfire located at the Highway 5 and 97C interchange started yesterday afternoon, April 20, and has grown to two hectares in size.

The wildfire service did not immediately respond to a request for information.

Meanwhile, the Petit Creek wildfire northeast of Merritt is being held. It remains mapped at 100 ha today, and the wildfire service expects a more detailed briefing later today.

The Miller Estates subdivision and the Canford community remain on evacuation alert.

There are currently 28 active wildfires in B.C., according to the wildfire service. Twelve of those are in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Check the B.C. Wildfire Service website here for updates.
