Merritt mom Jordan Young is honouring her six-year-old daughter at a memorial next week, and is inviting members of the community to say their goodbyes.

Ember Young died in a car crash near Logan Lake on Nov. 18, 2021, when the family’s vehicle was struck by a utility truck head-on as they fled the flooding in Merritt.

Six months after the tragedy, Young is hosting the memorial, and encourages everyone to bring fairy wings because fairies were Ember’s favourite thing. She said moving forward has been very challenging for the family. This gathering will be a tiny step forward in their healing journey, and a show of gratitude to the community.

“My daughter was obsessed with fairies,” Young said. “We had her cremated in her fairy wings. Anything to do with fairies or butterflies reminds us of her. She was so gentle and soft she reminded you of a fairy.”

Jordan and her daughter Hailey were seriously injured in the collision. Hailey suffered a broken arm while Jordan broke bones and is still doing physiotherapy for her other injuries.

Young attributed their current well-being to the support they received from the community, a big reason why the memorial will be open to the public.

“The community came together for us and did fundraising,” she said. “It was crazy to see how many people supported us. I was able to get a rental and a vehicle. It has been a huge struggle but our life has turned around because of the people around us.”

Jordan described her late daughter as happy, gentle, loving and shy with bright blue eyes.

Ember’s life will be honoured at the Baillie House Gardens in Merritt on Tuesday, June 7 at 3 p.m.
