Most actively traded companies on the TSX

Some of the most active companies traded Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (13,383.60, up 171.10 points):

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 77 cents, or 10.55 per cent, to $8.07 on 17.6 million shares.

Claude Resources Inc. (TSX:CRJ). Miner. Up 15 cents, or 11.81 per cent, to $1.42 on 15.1 million shares. Silver Standard Resources (TSX:SSO) (down $1.04, or 11.65 per cent, to $7.89 on 3.1 million shares) has a friendly deal to acquire Saskatoon-based Claude Resources, which operates a gold mine in northeastern Saskatchewan. The offer values Claude Resources at C$377 million in total or the equivalent of about $1.65 per share — mostly from shares of Vancouver-based Silver Standard.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Up 48 cents, or 9.94 per cent, to $5.31 on 14.7 million shares.

GeneNews Ltd. (TSX:GEN). Health-care. Up 7.5 cents, or 78.95 per cent, to 17 cents on 13.1 million shares.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up 25 cents, or 3.55 per cent, to $7.29 on 13 million shares.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up one cent, or 0.25 per cent, to $3.99 on 11.4 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

TransCanada Corp. (TSX:TRP). Oil and gas. Up 12 cents, or 0.24 per cent, to $49.42 on 1.7 million shares. TransCanada Corp. plans to end its agreements to buy power from three coal-fired plants in Alberta, saying the contracts are continuing to hurt their bottom line. The Calgary-based company said Monday costs associated with carbon-dioxide emissions from the plants have risen and are forecast to increase further over the remaining term of the agreements.
