KAMLOOPS - A 26-year-old man is in custody after allegedly bear-spraying a Kamloops RCMP officer this morning.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release an officer located a suspect wanted for breach of probation on the beach near the Thompson River at around 9 a.m. today, July 12.

When the officer told the suspect he was under arrest, the suspect took off running, Shelkie says. The officer followed, and at one point, the suspect turned around and bear-sprayed the officer in the face.

The officer continued to chase the suspect on foot and catching him in the 200 block of Tranquille Road. At this point the officer pepper sprayed the suspect and subdued him.

Other officers attended shortly after and took the man into custody.

Traffic on Tranquille Road was temporarily delayed while B.C. Ambulance gave medical attention to both the officer and the suspect. Neither the suspect nor the police officer suffered any injuries, she says.

The man is from Kamloops and was previously known to police, Shelkie says.

RCMP have not released the supsect's identity.
