OSOYOOS - A 19-year-old Mexican National arrested at the border with a backpack full of cocaine faces sentencing later this month.
RCMP and the United States Border Patrol combined efforts, arresting two men near the Boot Lake area east of Oroville/Osoyoos Lake January 3, 2014.
Andy Garcia-Macias was arrested soon after he and the other man crossed the border from the US into Canada.
Police found nine bricks of cocaine weighing about nine kilograms in total inside the backpack Garcia-Macias was wearing. The second man fled back to the United States and was arrested by the border patrol. Though he had nothing in his possession at the time, a thorough search during the arrest in Canada revealed a second backpack containing an additional eight kilograms of cocaine.
Garcia-Macias entered a guilty plea for possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and sentencing takes place May 26, 2014.
