VERNON - A man was arrested for drunk driving after he allegedly hit a pedestrian in downtown Vernon last night.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, shortly after 9 p.m. yesterday, May 28, officers were called to the intersection at 30 Avenue and 32 Street where a 59-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle displayed signs of intoxication and was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The 59-year-old pedestrian was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

"Drivers who choose to operate motor vehicles while impaired are a threat to the safety of both the motoring and pedestrian public," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett said in the release. "The RCMP is committed to removing these drivers from our roadways."

The driver was released and will appear in court at a later date.
