While a lynx was spotted a few blocks away from a Penticton elementary school today, the acting principal says there's no cause for concern.

Initially a social media report was made on a well-known Facebook group warning other Penticton residents about a lynx being spotted in the Carmi area a few blocks away from Columbia Elementary this afternoon, Oct. 28.

"We contacted the conservation office and they said lynx are really interested in rodents and small birds and avoid human contact... there's actually a healthy population of bobcats and a few lynx up in the area so they don't see them as a risk to humans," acting principal of Trevor Robinson said.

Robinson hasn't seen one in the area before saying "they're pretty shy creatures."

This past weekend another elusive wildcat was spotted wandering around a Kamloops neighbourhood.

An adult bobcat was spotted on the North Shore in McArthur Island Park and wandering through the surrounding neighbourhoods on Oct. 25.
