Lumby man arrested after three-hour stand off

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP called in the big guns after they were called to a reported assault north of Lumby last night.

Police first responded to Sugar Lake Road, north of Lumby, around 9:30 p.m., July 27, but they couldn't find a suspect, according to a news release.

Just before midnight, the suspect was eventually found at a home on Mabel Lake Road.

"During their attempts to make contact with the suspect, officers at the scene observed a firearm and ammunition inside the home in close proximity to the man," Const. Chris Terleski of Vernon RCMP said in a news release.

Police backed off and made a perimeter around the house, opting to wait for the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, according to the release.

Hours later, the man left the house "willingly" and was arrested without incident, police said. The gun and ammunition were also seized from the house.

As of today, July 28, the 43-year-old Lumby man is still in custody awaiting his first appearance in court, but the assault is still under investigation.
