Longtime rivals battle in Interior final

PENTICTON - The Penticton Vees and the Vernon Vipers will face-off in the BCHL Interior Conference best-of-seven series, starting Friday, March 14th at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Vees swept the Merritt Centennials in their first round match-up, while the Vipers took out the West Kelowna Warriors in six games. This will be the sixth time the two teams have met in the Fred Page Cup playoffs since 2005. The rivals last met in the 2010 Interior Conference Final, which the Vipers took in six games.

The season series between the two teams was close but the Vees bettered the Vipers, winning four of the seven meetings, including two of three at the SOEC. The Vees outscored the Vipers 24-18 in the season series.

Cody DePourcq led the Vees in scoring against the Vipers in the regular season, picking up six goals and nine points in seven games. Brad McClure came in second with three goals and six points and Brett Beauvais finished with a goal and six points. Both Vees goalies split the season series versus Vernon and both finished with two wins each. Olivier Mantha was 2-2 against the Vipers, while maintaining a .904 save percentage. Hunter Miska was 2-1 with a .933 save percentage.

Game one of the Best-of-Seven Interior Conference Final goes Friday, March 14th at the SOEC; face-off is slated for 7pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Valley First Box Office at the SOEC, or online at www.valleyfirsttix.com Beer and soft drinks are just $2.50 and hotdogs are priced at just $3. The rock band “Fluxx” will be performing live at both game one and two.
