Nanaimo-area teen dies in longboard collision on Vancouver Island

NANAIMO, B.C. - A Vancouver Island teenager has been killed while longboarding near Nanaimo, B.C.

RCMP Const. Gary O'Brien says the 17-year-old was riding in the southbound lane of the road directly in front of Cedar Secondary School, 10 kilometres south of downtown Nanaimo, when he was hit by a northbound flat deck truck.

The teen was rushed to hospital in Nanaimo but was pronounced dead.

O'Brien says the collision occurred Monday evening on a dimly-lit stretch of road and the victim was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing.

The driver stayed at the scene and co-operated with police, and officers say alcohol and speed are not considered factors, but an investigation is continuing.

The name of the teen has not been released.
