London Drugs footing Remembrance Day bill in Victoria

VICTORIA - London Drugs will be footing the bill for Remembrance Day ceremonies in Victoria for the next few years.

In a press release, the retail chain store, which opened its first Victoria location in 1980, announced it will be covering the costs of Remembrance Day and Veteran's ceremonies in Victoria this year in order to remove the community's financial worry around such events.

Remembrance Day has been a hot-button topic in Victoria this week. A motion was brought towards the Victoria council suggesting the City ask the federal government to help pay for this Remembrance Day ceremony, which marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The motion sparked intense backlash and it was withdrawn this week.

“We don’t think for our Veteran’s and current serving Canadian Armed Forces members, that they should have to worry about fighting for remembrance and political lobbying,” said Clint Mahlman, London Drugs CEO and president, in the press release. “We should come together as a community to honour their personal and their families sacrifices.”

The press release noted London Drugs will cover the cost of the ceremonies for at least a few years.
