At around 8:20 a.m., RCMP officers, ambulance paramedics and firefighters responded to the collision at the intersection of Highway 97 and Birnie Road.

One of the involved vehicles, a small Toyota pickup truck had caught fire and was fully engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived, RCMP said.

According to the initial investigation, the collision occurred when the pickup truck, travelling northbound on Highway 97, crossed into the southbound lanes and was struck by a large, commercial vehicle driving southbound on Highway 97.

The driver and lone occupant of the pickup, a 41-year-old Lake Country man, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the commercial vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries, said RCMP.

Highway 97 was closed for approximately four hours for emergency personnel to safely complete their work and for police to conduct their investigation, RCMP said. A member of the RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services team attended to conduct a full examination of the scene and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has dash-cam video, is asked to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.
