Kelowna RCMP make arrest in vehicle theft

KELOWNA - A 52-year-old Kelowna woman could be facing charges after stealing a vehicle from a private driveway earlier today.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle theft today, Nov. 27, just after 7 a.m. in the private driveway of a home located in the 1100 block of Stockwell Avenue, according to an RCMP media release.

Officers were told the registered owner had started his maroon coloured Dodge 1500 pickup truck and left it idling while he returned to his residence to grab a coffee. During this time, an unknown woman got into his truck and drove off.

“RCMP flooded the area in search of the stolen pickup truck, which was spotted a short time later by one of our officers abandoned along Poplar Point Drive,” Kelowna RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release.

Police searched the area with the assistance of the RCMP's canine unit.

“As a direct result of the police neighbourhood canvass for witnesses, police were called to return shortly after 9 a.m. after a resident spotted the suspect walking in the area,” O’Donaghey says.

A Kelowna woman, 52, was taken into police custody without incident and faces potential charges. She remains in police custody at this time, as police continue their investigation, O’Donaghey says.

The vehicle will undergo a forensic identification examination for physical evidence.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP detachment at 250-762-3300.
