KELOWNA - Two Kelowna RCMP officers were exhausted after a pair of back to back foot chases late Thursday afternoon.

The two officers witnessed one man allegedly discharge a can of bear spray at another man at the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Water Street.

“The potency of the burning and irritating effects of the spray impacted numerous innocent bystanders in the immediate vicinity of the assault,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP said, in a press release.

The officers pursued the suspect on foot and a 28-year-old Lake Country man was taken into custody without further incident. He is currently facing potential criminal charges.

Moments later the same officers were informed that a woman suspect tossed a planter through a large plate glass window of a business nearby. The officers engaged in a second foot chase as the 29-year-old Kelowna woman fled the scene. She is currently in custody also facing potential charges, and is expected to appear in court in August.

“The Kelowna RCMP Summer Policing Strategy is well underway, ‎with enhanced patrols across Kelowna,” Supt. Brent Mundle, Officer-In-Charge of the Kelowna RCMP said, in a press release.

Kelowna residents can expect a higher police presence throughout the summer and at special events.
