Kelowna Mounties look for witnesses to near-drowning in Okanagan Lake

A man nearly drowned Sunday, Aug. 19, 2019, in Kelowna's City Park on Okanagan Lake.

KELOWNA - A summer swim took a near-deadly turn Sunday when a man found submerged in Okanagan Lake was dragged to shore seemingly unconscious.

He made it out alive thanks to the help of other beachgoers, but the man's condition is worsening and RCMP are looking for witnesses to what happened.

“A couple of beachgoers reportedly located the adult male swimmer on the bottom of the lake and managed to pull the victim to shore,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the Kelowna RCMP said in a press release. “The man’s rescuers were joined by other members of the public who immediately started life-saving measures.”

A woman at the scene of the near-drowning said that a man was just swimming by, and when he looked down he could see the victim. While it looked like he wasn't going to make it, initially, the crowd was surprised to see him pull through with the help of first responders.

They flooded beach area and emergency medical crews took over CPR at the scene and rushed to the victim to hospital in serious yet stable condition. The victim's condition has since worsened and he remains in hospital at this time.

If you witnessed this incident and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
