Kelowna cop injured arresting local man wanted on nine warrants

KELOWNA – A tip from the public helped police catch a Kelowna man wanted on nine warrants.

Police found John Aronson, 30, in the area of Parkview Crescent and Springfield Road shortly before 4 p.m. April 10. A media release from RCMP says Aronson has outstanding warrants relating to an alleged assault in September 2017.

Const. Lesley Smith says police surrounded the parked vehicle Aronson was in at a housing complex, but he didn’t go quietly.

“Upon seeing the police, Aronson immediately jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive off.  He collided with a police vehicle and then drove into a tree which caused the airbag to deploy,” Smith says.

The release says one of the officers who helped make the arrest was injured and required stitches to his face.

Aronson suffered minor injuries from the airbag and is being held in police custody.

“Police at the scene were extremely concerned for the public’s safety as it was evident that Mr. Aronson’s determination to flee from police outweighed any regard for the safety of the people at the complex or in the area, including our members,” Smith says. “This is a prime example of how police officers put themselves in dangerous situations every day in order to ensure that criminals are caught and our community remains safe.”
