A new cougar story for children was written by a Kelowna author who finds inspiration from local wilderness.

Luna, by Loraine Kemp, was published by Crwth Press last month. Her book tells the story of a timid young cougar who becomes separated from her family and is only able to endure the elements by finding strength and deeper meaning in past experiences.

“She starts off a very timid cougar that’s been bullied by her brothers,” Kemp said. “But through all of her experience trying to get back home she learns a lot about herself and gains more confidence.”

Making the situation even deadlier for Luna is a lone wolf that stalks her.

“There's a thrilling meetup between the cougar and wolf right at the end,” Kemp said.

Luna is recommended for readers between the ages of eight and 11. During research for the book, she worked with the Kamloops Wildlife Park and used pictures of the cougar there when it was younger for illustrations within the book.

There is no specified setting for Luna, however Kemp came up with the idea for the story while hiking the Wildhorse Caynon Trail at Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park.

The book launch is happening at the Capital News Centre in Kelowna from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 23.
