Kamloops RCMP officer injured while making arrest

A Kamloops RCMP officer was injured on Tuesday when a man he was trying to arrest got combative.

It was one of several arrest incidents dealt with by Kamloops officers that day.

At about 3:30 p.m., June 1, Kamloops officers were in the 700 block of Victoria Street after 100 Mile RCMP asked them to pick up a man wanted for assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement and extortion, according to an RCMP media release.

The man became combative and one officer received non-life threatening injuries for which he required medical attention. A 24-year-old Kamloops man was held in police cells awaiting a court appearance.

Another 24-year-old Kamloops man ran away when police responded to a trespassing call in the 400 block of McGill Road at about 9 a.m., RCMP said. The caller said a number of people were walking through back yards on the way to a camp site behind a store in the 900 block of Columbia Street West.

A police officer discovered one of the men was wanted on a warrant for theft and obstruction. When the man was told he was under arrest, he allegedly fled, leading to a short chase and struggle. He was arrested and later released but may be facing additional charges of resisting arrest.

At about 2:40 p.m., police were called to a shoplifting incident in the 700 block of Victoria Street. That led to the arrest on several warrants of a 44-year-old Kamloops woman. The woman was wanted for theft by both Abbottsford and Barriere police along with theft and driving while prohibited by Kamloops police. She’s scheduled to appear in court on June 17.

At about 9:17 p.m., police patrolling a frontage road in Valleyview spotted and arrested a man wanted on a breaching a release order. The 39-year-old Kamloops man was released and ordered to appear in court on June 7.
